JOY OF READING MOBILE LIBRARY (CHINA)

MIGRANT CHILDREN
Since 2011, the Children’s Mobile Library has visited over 180 schools and reached 130,400 children in different parts of China. The Joy of Reading Mobile Library primarily serves internal migrant children in urban areas where their parents have come to work. In many cities, such children are unable to attend public schools. The poor private schools seldom have access to a library.

THE VEHICLE
In 2020, a brand-new bus replaced the big converted truck which served as the Mobile Library for 8 years (2011-2019). The new vehicle with modern facilities and low gas emissions continues to bring the joy of reading to children in mainland China.

BOOKS & VOLUNTEERS
The Mobile Library has over 4,000 books and offers a variety of quality children’s literature. During the Mobile Library visits, children can borrow, read and return books. Volunteers from KONE China branches and local NGOs organize activities related to reading, learning, physical exercise and play.

STRONG PARTNERS
KONE China has a substantial role in Mobile Library's operation. Cooperation with the Hangzhou Children’s LibraryHuzhou Library has introduced new resources to the traveling library’s program. Current Finnish partners - Sanoma, Fatpipe and Marimekko - help in making the Mobile Library's visit even more enjoyable.

REPLICABILITY
KCF is constantly searching for ways to replicate and spread the Mobile Library concept. The project also encourages and facilitates the donation of books to schools lacking adequate libraries.
